The global food problem

According to research, the global food industry produces a third more calories than needed to adequately feed the entire global population. Having that in mind, we could only assume that world hunger would be close to inexistent. Still, we are aware that this isn’t the case, and that hunger is a prevalent issue.

So, what is behind this reality?

Food waste is the largest culprit. People over buy food, wasting a large ammount of what is purchased. In na effort to amend this issue, several organizations and initiatives have surfaced with the purpose of providing good food, that would otherwise be wasted, to people that will consume it.

But what about individuals that live in rural places, where these services can’t reach?

In these cases, governments should try to ensure that populations have access to proper infrastructures that encourage farming and the breeding of livestock. People should have access to land, a clean water supply, sanitary installations, schools and markets. The goal should be to make life in the countryside more attractive, making sure that rural exodus isn’t the only option, as an effort to avoid the overpopulation of cities, which would only aggravate the issue.

In conclusion, global hunger is a problem that we should seek to eradicate, even if we aren’t aware of its magnitude or if we aren’t personally affected by it. Efforts are being made but we should take it upon ourselves to make conscious choices that limit our food waste and try to ensure that food gets to the right hands of people who need it.

Ultimately, we need to be able to end the vicious cycle that hunger and poverty represent, taking away opportunities at a better life and a safer life.
