During this fall of 2020, I believe most of us are eager to find out what will be the outcome of this year’s presidential election in the USA. This feeling is perfectly valid when we take into consideration that we are talking about one of the largest economic powerhouses of the modern world and how the final result might influence most other countries. Even so, it is important to be mindful of how governments in other nations handle elections, keeping in mind the extreme importance these have. That is why, today, I wish to shed light on a problem facing the people of Myanmar, fraudulent and unfair elections. Several human rights infringements are being committed, since voting is being denied to certain people, solely based upon their ethnic background, race or religion. Additionally, journalists, students and others are being persecuted for criticising the current government and trying to exercise their right to freedom of speech. The government is currently censoring state media, and, therefore limiting the amount and type of information reaching the general Myanmar population.
Polls for the election are to be held on 8 November, and it is up to not only Myanmar residents, but everyone that can obtain unbiased information about this situation to bring awareness to the problem. Ultimately, attempting to eradicate fraudulent elections, not only in Myanmar, but everywhere else.
