In one of our previous English lessons we had a debate about feminism and if it is causing more harm than good and I talked about how the women that don't pursue typical gender roles are usually criticized and bashed for doing the same that men do.
A few weeks ago I encountered myself with a video about a review on the movie "The Devil wears Prada" and it precisely talked about the double standards on how higher status women are perceived. The video is really interesting however it´s 22m long so if you don´t have the time just watch between 9:03/15:02
The video states that "Yet even though Miranda's personality is based on men the premise of this movie would never work if the character actually were a man because there nothing novel or surprising about the powerful men being demanding and cutthroat as he chases successes"
The premise of the movie still applies to this day on women in the workplace that have the main focus of their life in their careers.
Women that don't fit in the norm are perceived as selfish, demanding, bossy insensitive and not caring however, the high-status man is just doing his job.
This shows how typical gender roles are still really embedded in our culture and it may appear that we don´t need feminism in Western society but we still have a long way to go to fight these same gender roles that society pushes us indirectly to follow.
