During may Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is celebrated. This is
a time dedicated to the honoring of AAPI customs and culture.
This period of time was first implemented on October 1978, when President Jimmy
Carter signed a joint resolution where it was stated that the seven days following
May 4th would be dedicated to the AAPI community and their contributions to the
United States of America. Later on, these seven days were extended into the full
month of May.
But why May?
May was chosen for this homage because the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the
United States on this very month, additionally, the First Transcontinental Railroad,
built by a large majority of Chinese immigrants, was inaugurated on May 10th, 1869.
Contrary to what many people might think, the Asian continent is na extremely
diverse place, comprised of so many different cultures that deserve to be celebrated
and remembered equally.
It is important to note that this time is especially important when it comes to keeping
traditions alive and showing that even when you immigrate from your country, your
culture doesn´t have to stay behind, it can follow you wherever you go.
AAPI Heritage Month is an important time for the Asian American and Pacific Islander
people, where all of the different cultures and traditions that comprise this
community can be celebrated and all of the contributions of these people can be
remembered.
